Artist’s Statement

Originally from England, I immigrated to Canada in 1971. I have loved art all my life and my earliest childhood memories are of painting. Classes at the Ottawa School of Art, the Nepean Visual Art Centre and from various artists have been invaluable in helping me to realize my own vision and style. After teaching Visual Arts to high school students for many years, I am now very happy to be able to concentrate fully on my art.

For the last few years I have worked mostly in acrylics and mixed media on fairly large canvases. My work generally falls into three categories – streetscape, landscape and flowers. Movement, colour and light are the driving force in my paintings. I like to portray people and places as if they are caught unaware at a moment in time. I experience great enjoyment in capturing the essence of a street scene, especially of a culture that is foreign to me. Initially I found the landscape of Eastern Ontario to be vast and unforgiving after the rolling hills and little villages in England, but I have come to love the colour, space and distinct seasons of the countryside where I live. Gardening has been a lifelong hobby, but it is only recently that I have begun to portray the riot of hues, lights and darks of a summer garden.
